LETTER: 'Breeder' column fosters more harm than good

Dear editor:

The goal of last Friday's article, 'Breeder'..., if I understand it correctly, was for the Ball State academic community to come up with derogatory words that gay people can use to make fun of straight people.

This goal is fundamentally a waste of breath. Negative humor in general and definitely negative humor that degrades another person is a very unfortunate and an all-too-regular occurrence in our culture.

Tearing someone down, highlighting a person's mistakes or faults, and making yourself feel good by making another person feel bad is a clear sign of a person's lack of maturity, character and self-esteem.

It seems much more logical to me for us as a diverse, interracial, tolerant Ball State community to come up with ways for people to degrade each other at all.

I find nothing positive or good about seeking out new words which degrade another person no matter what race they were born into, what religion they profess, or what lifestyle they may be leading. Instead, I have found it much more helpful to find creative ways to honor, respect and love those who are different than me.

I don't necessarily agree that there needs to be more discussion between gays and straights.

The discussion, though, should involve respect, responsibility, and love, while focusing on the truths, outcomes, and differences between what society has chosen to call two very different sexual orientations.
