Actor, astronaut to visit Ball State

Celebrities to be part of UniverCity 2002

Actor Danny Glover and former astronaut Sally Ride are among the high-profile public figures already slated to speak during UniverCity 2002 at Ball State in the fall.

Glover and Ride head a list of speakers who will personify this year's UniverCity theme of "Celebrate Community."

Glover is an acclaimed actor, director and producer who has starred in films such as "The Color Purple," the "Lethal Weapon" series, and most recently, "The Royal Tenenbaums."

Glover is also a noted literacy advocate and racial equality activist.

Sally Ride was the first American woman to enter outer space, and the third woman over all. She flew on two NASA Challenger missions and has since written four books about space.

Award-winning authors Bruce Feiler and N. Scott Momaday, poverty specialist Ruby K. Payne, children's rights advocate Craig Kielburger, and school crisis expert Scott Poland will also present.

Feiler has written five critically acclaimed books, including the New York Times best seller "Walking the Bible: A Journey by Land Through the Five Books of Moses."

Native American Momaday won the Pulitzer Prize for his novel "House Made of Dawn." He is a poet, playwright, and painter, as well as a professor of English and American literature at the University of Arizona.

Payne has authored several books about working with impoverished people. She has 30 years of education experience.

Kielburger is an 18-year-old international spokesman for children's rights who founded Kids Can Free the Children, the world's largest children-helping-children network. More than 100,000 children in 35 countries participate in the program.

Poland, a Ball State alumnus and nationally recognized school crisis expert, worked with authorities in the Oklahoma City bombing and Columbine High School shootings.

UniverCity 2002: Celebrate Community, a weeklong festival, will run Sept. 22-27. More speakers will be announced in the coming weeks.
