COLUMN: Political involvement for right reasons

Welcome to another grand semester here at Ball State. I just have a few words to say regarding involvement here on campus.

I figured I would remind everyone how easy it is to be involved in politics here at Ball State. My case in point will be Mel Fox's campaign for Congress.

You might remember that last month Fox spoke on campus for the University Democrats. I thought she did an excellent job, because she not only talked to the audience about her issues but also asked the group what its concerns were.

Fox didn't draw things out and bore us with a long speech. She made her points while keeping the audience involved.

She also was able to inform audience members about government policies in general, for those who weren't up to date.

Her campaign manager and her husband were in attendance and both were helpful sources of information.

Most of the audience members gave their e-mail addresses to Fox so she remain in contact with us.

I thought that was a great idea, because she is concerned about how people in her district, including Ball State students, feel about issues.

I enjoy when an everyday person decides to become involved in politics and succeeds. Fox is a really down-to-earth person; and I hope that the UDEMS get to work more on her campaign.

So, that's what I mean about involvement. It could be little things like having conversations about issues or simply mailing pamphlets for a candidate because they need all the help they can get.

You don't even have to agree with all of their issues as long as they are involved in politics for the right reasons.

What are the right reasons, you ask? That's totally up to you. It might simply be because of a candidate's political party, or because you feel strongly about the same issue.

That is what is so great about politics. You can take what you want from it, no matter what. That's why it is one of my favorite hobbies.

So, get involved. It takes such a small amount of your precious time and you'll feel good about helping others.

I am not even saying that for just the University Democrats. If you are Republican or some third party, join that group.
