EDITORIAL: Coach Davis' comments make IU poor sports

Coach's comments should have been said to own players, not the press.

In sports, there are winners, and there are losers. There are those who win graciously, and there are those who lose in the same manner. On Saturday Ball State lost a highly publicized matchup with Indiana, and Ball State head coach Tim Buckley accepted that loss graciously.

Indiana's Mike Davis played the role of the sore winner.

After a game, it is customary for the winning coach to come in and give an opening statement. The statement is usually short and gives credit to the opposing team.

Davis' comments were just short.

"I know a lot of you guys thought that Ball State was going to beat us, but I think we have a pretty good basketball team," he said.

Davis went on to let everyone know how he felt about people actually thinking Ball State would beat the Hoosiers.

"It blew my mind that people picked Ball State to beat us," he said. "It was really like a slap in our face."

The Cardinals lost the game - a big game for the Ball State basketball program and all involved were disappointed. But Buckley took the time to acknowledge the winner.

"I thought Indiana played a really good game tonight, and they played with a lot of energy and a lot of heart," Buckley said. "I tip my hat to Indiana, they played a great basketball game, and they have a very fine team."

Ball State lost the game with class. Indiana won the game with an arrogance that IU fans should be ashamed of.
