Cards down IPFW, set arena record

Theron Smith pulled down a career-high 21 rebounds and tallied 29 points for the night.

With four Cardinal players scoring in double figures, Ball State's men's basketball team set a new Worthen Arena record for points in their 113-89 win over Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne.

The Cardinals were led by forward Theron Smith's game high 29 points. Smith's total rebounds, 29 for the night was a career high and new Worthen Arena record. The previous record for rebounds in Worthen Arena was 17 by Bonzi Wells in 1996 against Kent State.

"He made a couple of league moves out there tonight," IPFW's head coach Doug Noll said of Smith's performance.

When asked to comment on Smith's performance, Cardinal guard Chris Williams, who scored 20 points of his own, looked at the stat sheet and responded "Oh, Jesus!"

"What can you say? 29 points and 21 rebounds. That's MAC West Player of the Week again," Williams said. "We couldn't ask anything more from him."

Smith credited his concentration during the game for his exceptional night.

"Tonight, I just came out focused," Smith said.

While Smith did most of the damage, the whole team was involved in the win. Patrick Jackson and Lonnie Jones scored 22 and 15 points respectively.

"Hopefully that depth creates some separation. I think we did a little of that tonight," Ball State's head coach Tim Buckley said.

Ball State effectively used that depth to wear down an IPFW team that was playing its fourth game in seven days.

"I asked these kids to play four tough games in seven days and that is ridiculous. It isn't fair to these kids," Noll said.

Noll, whose team has recently lost to Michigan and Michigan State, spoke highly of Ball State.

"The Sagarin ratings had Ball State at No. 4 today, in the country and I think they are somewhere in that area," Noll said, "This team could go a long way."

Once again, the Cardinals had a hard time starting the game. With under three minutes to go in the first half, the Mastadons were trailing by only two at 42-40. A 10-2 Ball State run to end the first half extended the Cardinals' lead to 10 by halftime.

"We don't have a 20-point play, so we can't tip it up and be up 20," Buckley said.

Early in the second half, with IPFW hanging around within 10 points, Ball State went on a 23-5 run sparked by a Jones' three-point play to move out to a 89-62 point lead. The Cardinals never looked back.

One of the few bright spots in the loss for IPFW was forward Ric Wyand. The freshman finished with 28 points in 33 minutes of play.
