Roller, Cards begin season

Returning five starters and 11 letter-winners from last year's team, the women's basketball squad opens its regular season at 7 tonight against Wright State in Worthen Arena.

First-year head coach Tracy Roller has already guided the Cardinals to a 6-1 record since she took the reigns in June. BSU went 5-0 on an overseas trip this summer and 1-1 in the preseason, which includes a 95-77 win over Basketball Travelers.

Wright State, coming off a 6-22 record last season, also beat the Travelers 64-57 in preseason play.

The all-time series between the two clubs is deadlocked at three, but BSU has won the last two, including a 102-73 victory at Wright State last year.

However, a brand new coaching staff and some new players for Wright State, makes Roller cautious heading into the game.

"We don't know much of them at all," she said. "I understand about coming in as a new coach. We've got to be ready for anything."

The Cards have won six of their last seven season openers. In 1997, they dropped a 79-64 decision to Indiana, but had a solid 87-69 win over Bradley in 2000.

According to Roller, the team is dying to make it seven of eight.

"They're a little squirrely," Roller said. "They're really fired up, but in ways, I'm more anxious than the girls to see how we look against another team."
