EDITORIAL: Proper promotion will draw more fans

If the Athletic Department wants its attendance at games to improve, it must be clear as to how to follow the Cardinals.

On Monday evening, Ball State defeated the No. 4 ranked team in the country, and not too many students even knew that the game was on the air. Ball State upset Kansas 93-91 in the opening round of the Maui Invitational -- the biggest upset in the history of Ball State basketball.

The DAILY NEWS told everyone exactly where and when to watch or listen to the game in its Monday edition, but if Ball State wants its fan base to grow it must publicize its teams better.

Yes, Ball State is getting a huge push of publicity from its weekly plugs on "Late Night with David Letterman." But that's only good for letting people know about the university. If the athletic department wants its attendance at games to improve, it must be clear as to how to follow the Cardinals.

Not one ad in the paper was taken to let fans know where to watch the game. Students have said in the past that one of the reasons they don't come to games is because they can watch Indiana or Purdue in their rooms on TV.

TV is crucial to help gain awareness of Ball State basketball.

Ball State has taken a step in the right direction, however with the growth of its radio coverage. Ball State basketball will reach the Fort Wayne area with the Ball State Basketball Radio Network. WLBC will serve as the flagship station and WLYV in Fort Wayne is currently the lone affiliate.

Ball State's fan base will grow and thrive with proper promotion of its teams.
