Senior Ryan Eddy and junior Nicole Cervo were crowned this year's Homecoming King and Queen during the 17th annual Student Scholarship Talent Search Thursday night. The two were sponsored by Sigma Phi Epsilon and Woody/Shales Hall Council, respectively. The Talent Search was captured by male vocalist Jace Wittig who performed "If I Sing."
Presented by the 2001 Homecoming Steering Committee, the Talent Search is one of several Homecoming 2001 "Livin' on the Edge" events showcasing the talent and school spirit of Ball State students.
The Student Scholarship Talent Search included performances in the five categories of dance, instrumental, female vocal, male vocal, and musical group. The winner in each category was awarded a $400 scholarship from the Ball State University Alumni Association. The overall winner of the 2001 Talent Search received an additional $500 scholarship.
Erin Heasley, talent search chairman, and Adam Drummond, general chairman, initially took the podium to introduce emcees Jeffrey Carter, director of University Singers, and Betsy Bobel, Miss Indiana 2000 .
After thanking event sponsors and the 2001 Homecoming Steering Committee, Drummond and Bobel introduced the night's first act, the accapella group High Five. High Five sang an acapella rendition of The Dave Matthews Band's "Ants Marching."
Highlighting the event were, in addition to Wittig, violinist Masakazu Nakagawa performing "Colors of the Wind" from Disney's Pocahontas and vocalist Sarah Nelson singing the Johnny Mercer tune "Come Rain or Come Shine."
Carter took a moment to dedicate the event to the victims of the recent tragedies and share a moment of silence with everyone present.
Homecoming King candidate Don Walter played a piano arrangement by Bruce Weir, and the student-comprised Jackson Five group performed a dance routine to Michael Jackson's "2 Bad."
The Talent Show performances came to an end with Josh Christoff and Lindsay Coons performing "Written in the Stars" by Tim Rice and Elton John.
Performing while the judges tallied the final scores for the performers were The Phi Mu Alpha Jazz Band and the 2001 Air Jam winners, with their rendition of N'Sync's "Pop."
