Campus Orchestra is made up of students with a passion for music, but not necessarily majoring in it.

No audition is necessary to be part of the Campus Orchestra, and concertmaster Noel Cerda believes that it creates a more open and collaborative environment.

“I think with auditions, while it definitely has its benefits, it kind of separates people too much and almost creates cliques,” Cerda said.

While students in the orchestra also take a class, one-hour practices outside of class take place once a week. The extra practice time allows the orchestra to open up participation to the community and staff as well.

“We are all pretty friendly to one another and it’s a really cool rag-tag bunch of people coming together to play music,” Cerda said.

There is currently no limit to how many can be enrolled; however, conductor Matthew Cooperman said  if a particular section gets too big, it can cause some difficulties.

This year, the orchestra has about 75 members and is being run by Douglas Droste, associate professor of music. Typically, however, graduate students conduct the orchestra and lead practices.

Campus Orchestra performs once a semester, but members are challenged to perform advanced compositions. In past years, the orchestra has played a wide variety of pieces from video games to hits from the ‘50s.

Currently, the orchestra is working hard to prepare for this semester's concert, which will be at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 20. The group is in need of horn players. Those interested in joining should contact Droste at dpdroste@bsu.edu
