After two seasons of playing basketball at Youngstown State, Ryan Weber was ready for a change.

“I felt like I didn’t really fit in [at Youngstown State] outside of basketball,” Weber said. “I wanted to find a place where I thought I fit in better all around.”

Weber, a redshirt junior for the Ball State men's basketball team this season, felt Ball State provided a better fit on and off the court.

At Youngstown State, Weber thought the program was too football oriented, and the excitement for basketball wasn’t there.

His sophomore season, Weber played 33 minutes per game, averaging 12.2 points and 4.3 rebounds. His 41.7 3-point shooting percentage and 85.9 free throw percentage were both team-highs.

Despite his breakout season, Weber wanted to move closer to home.

A native of Indianapolis, Ball State offered an opportunity to be only an hour away from home, and a good place to get his masters.

Second-year head coach James Whitford also figured in to the final decision, as Weber chose Ball State over seven other Division I programs.

As a redshirt, Weber is able to practice with the team, but can't travel with the team for away games.

Despite the restrictions, Weber's value lies with working with teammates in practice and participating on the scout team in preparation for game days.

"Ryan is a really good teammate off the court,” said freshman Sean Sellers. “On the court he’s a guy who, if you’re doing good, he’ll let you know, but if you’re doing bad he’s going to tell you what you need to work on.”

Sellers said he misses Weber's communication  when the Cardinals are traveling at road games is the communication and experience he exhibits whenever he’s around the players, something that will be a vital asset next season.

At 6-foot-6 and 212 pounds, Weber's shooting touch and ability to spread the floor can be a potential weapon on the wing for Ball State next year.

For the remainder of this season, Weber remains focused on improving his overall game, preparing teammates for their next contest, while displaying the experience he developed at Youngstown.

“I feel like I can bring an overall passion for the game and the desire to win,“ said Weber. “I will bring whatever I can to help make this team successful."
