SOFTBALL: Ball State splits doubleheader against Akron

Game 2

The Ball State softball team defeated Akron 15-2 in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.

The Cardinals were able to plate 15 runs on 15 hits in the game, scoring at least two runs in every inning including seven in the first.

Second baseman Emily Dabkoski and left fielder Jennifer Gilbert paced the offense with three hits each.

Gilbert led the team with five RBIs. She also hit her 73rd career home run in the game. Sophomore Sammi Cowger also homered, the first of her career.

On the mound, Kelsey Schifferdecker started and finished the game for the Cardinals. Freshman Jocelyn Rivera pitched 0.1 innings in relief. Schifferdecker allowed one run on six hits. She finished with one strikeout and one walk.

The doubleheader-split brings Ball State’s record to 25-16, and 5-3 in Mid-American Conference play.

Ball State returns to action at 1 p.m. Saturday for a game against Ohio.

Game 1  

The Ball State softball team dropped game one of today’s doubleheader against Akron 2-4.

The Cardinals tried to mount a late rally but were stopped short.

Two runs crossed the plate for Ball State on eight total hits -- each from a different batter. Seniors Jennifer Gilbert and Audrey Bickel recorded an RBI. Twelve runners were left on base.

Nicole Steinbach started the game on the mound for the Cardinals, pitching two innings. She allowed three runs on four hits while striking out two.

Fellow sophomore Kelsey Schifferdecker replaced Steinbach and pitched the final five innings. She limited the Zips to one run on six hits. Schifferdecker also had two strikeouts in the game.

No errors were committed by Ball State.

Ball State looks to bounce back in the second game against Akron this afternoon.
