WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Losing streak continues for Cardinals

There were plenty of highlights over the course of the weekend for the Ball State University women's volleyball team (10-13, 3-7). Kelsey Brandl posted 34 kills, numerous blocks and five service aces. Kaylee Schembra had a remarkable diving, one-handed pancake dig to keep a play alive. Brandl also recorded two digs in the back row, contributing to a critical point in a set win. Charde' Phillips blasted a kill off the face of a defender.

FOOTBALL: Lewis, Sykes shatter NCAA records in Cardinals' first win of season

YPSILANTI, Mich. - After running for 1,736 yards last season, expectations were sky high for Ball State University running back MiQuale Lewis this year.But Lewis struggled behind a young offensive line and has battled an injured ankle. The senior gained only 378 yards as the Cardinals started the year 0-7. The poor start led to questions about his running style and if he was the best fit for this year's offense.All of that went out the window at Eastern Michigan University as Lewis ran for 301 yards and set Ball State's single-game rushing record, while leading the Cardinals to a 29-27 win.

FOOTBALL: Page to have season ending surgery on thumb

The quest for Ball State University's first win this year will have to continue without starting quarterback Kelly Page.Coach Stan Parrish said Tuesday that Page would miss the final five games of the season with a broken right thumb. The injury will require surgery that will keep the redshirt freshman out of action for two to six weeks.

MEN'S GOLF: Cards win Flyer Invitational

Trailing by seven strokes, the men's golf team only had 18 holes to defeat then-leader University of Toledo. By shooting 12 strokes less than Toledo in the final round on Tuesday, Ball State won its first tournament of the Fall season.

Football team's success may be bad for local businesses

T.I.S. Bookstore general manager Pam Suminski said she has noticed a difference in her customers Ball State apparel preferences compared to last year."Last year when our customers came in, they were looking for shirts specifically relating to football," she said. "This year they're not necessarily as adamant about finding something with a helmet or football on it, they're just buying general Ball State logos."

FOOTBALL: Running game steps up after Page falls to injury

Stan Parrish looked over his play sheet at halftime Saturday and made the decision to scrap much of it.Ball State University was trailing Bowling Green State University 24-0 at the time and would have to finish the game without Kelly Page, who injured his right thumb. So despite needing to throw the ball to try and score quickly, Parrish played to his team's strength.

Freshman Aaron Mershman has spent all season acting like Ball State University's third-string quarterback. He travels with the team and sends in the play calls from the sidelines.The Cardinals lost Kelly Page in the second quarter Saturday against Bowling Green State University with an injured thumb and he did not return to the sideline. However, coach Stan Parrish said Mershman would not have played Saturday if backup Tanner Justice had gone down in the second half.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cardinals lose in straight sets to Ohio

The Ball State University women's volleyball team walked into the Convocation Center with the deck stacked against them. Ohio University was ranked No. 24 in the RPI and had only dropped two sets in Mid-American Conference action all season. On top of that, it was Homecoming Weekend in Athens.

Sean Baker was determined to not let a broken hand slow him down.The safety suffered the injury during Ball State University's game at Army and finished the game anyway. He begged coach Stan Parrish to let him play the next week at Auburn University, but Parrish held him out. Baker was back the next week with a large protective cast on his right hand.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards ready for weekend roadtrip

The first half of the Mid-American Conference schedule comes to a close Friday and Saturday evening for the Ball State University women's volleyball team (10-9, 3-3). The schedule comes to a close with perhaps the biggest challenge the Cardinals will face all season in the form of Ohio University (14-4, 6-0) who is 24th nationally in the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI).
