FIELD HOCKEY: Fifth-seeded Ball State hosts MAC Tourney

With their share of big losses, close losses and a few hard fought wins, the fifth-seeded Cardinals host this weekend's Mid-American Conference Tournament, beginning at 11 a.m. today against fourth-seeded Central Michigan University at the BSU Turf Field.

ATHLETICS: Triple threat

When senior Sarah Kehe walked into morning swim practice Monday, she was greeted by her teammates like a long lost friend.When the women's swimming and diving team began practicing the second week of the semester, they started without Kehe.The senior missed preseason training because she was preparing for the cross country season. In all, Kehe participates in three sports: cross country, swimming and track.

Students and athletics officials from Ball State University were within grasp of the most prestigious individual trophy in college football Monday.The Heisman Trophy was on display for people to touch and take their picture with at three Muncie businesses.

FIELD HOCKEY: Cards get shut out in pair of MAC losses

In its worst loss since the 2006 season, Ball State University was overwhelmed by Kent State University in an 8-0 shutout to end the Cardinals' regular season.Ball State was shut out in both of its games this weekend, falling 3-0 to Ohio University on Saturday.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING: Cards split pair of weekend meets

Standing on the deck of Lewellen Pool this weekend, coach Laura Seibold-Caudill had some modest expectations for her team during its first two meets.Expectations that were thrown to the wayside quickly after the start of Friday's meet against the University of Toledo.

FOOTBALL: Ball State's Wildcat expands against Ohio

The Wildcat had not yielded a pass for Ball State University this year, but Ohio University was sure they would see one Saturday. The Cardinals did throw out of the formation in their 20-17 loss to the Bobcats, and it surprised them anyway. In the fourth quarter, quarterback Tanner Justice took a lateral from triggerman Eric Williams and threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Hill streaking down the sideline.

CROSS COUNTRY: Cards finish 11th at MAC Championship

For the second straight season, the Ball State University cross country team finished in 11th place at the Mid-American Conference Championships on Saturday.Junior Ali Bishel led the Cardinals with a fourth place finish overall on the 6K course. Her time of 22:33 was under 15 seconds behind winner Ari Fisher from the University of Toledo in a tightly contested front pack.

WOMEN'S VOLEYBALL: Cards face MAC leader this weekend

What a difference a month makes. A month ago the Ball State University women's volleyball team (10-13, 3-7) was starting the Mid-American Conference slate with confidence and holding very high expectations.It had no reason to even think that by Halloween it would be fifth in the MAC West, five games behind division leading Western Michigan University (16-9, 8-2), whom Ball State faces Friday night.

SOCCER: Cards to end season at Miami

 The Cardinals, who have been eliminated from contention for the Mid-American Conference tournament, will play their last match of the season against the RedHawks (9-7-1, 5-4-1 MAC), and coach Michael Lovett said a win is much-needed.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING: BSU begins season admist change

Along with the splitting of the men's and women's swimming and diving teams, former co-head coaches Bob Thomas and Laura Seibold-Caudill each took a team, with Seibold-Caudill taking the reigns of the women's team, a post she held from 1979-2004 when the teams were combined. During the time of the combined teams, Seibold-Caudill was in charge of the divers while Thomas coached the swimmers.

FOOTBALL: Offensive line's confidence builds after win

Left guard Michael Switzer and center Kreg Hunter made a simple promise to Ball State University's tailbacks before last Saturday's game at Eastern Michigan University.Switzer and Hunter, the veterans of the offensive line, told the running backs there would be holes against the Eagles. All they would have to do is run through them.
