WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards dominate SIU-Edwardsville with Toledo game looming

Sometimes it pays to be bigger, faster, stronger and deeper. That was the difference Friday night at Worthen Arena between the Ball State University women's basketball team (8-8, 2-1 Mid-American Conference) and Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville (3-16), as the Cardinals came out on top, 64-40.

It might be too early in the season to begin naming favorites to win Player of the Year, but Maggert is making her argument on the court. Even if she is uncomfortable talking about her chances, the better she plays, the talk of her winning the award will increase.

Sure, there were positives with forward Emily Maggert eclipsing the 1,000 point mark for her career and the offense recording 80 points, but the negatives outweighed the positives for Ball State University Coach Kelly Packard and her team. Ball State fell to 7-8, 2-1 on the season, but may get a break from a challenging schedule Friday when they host Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (3-15).

Entering Saturday's meet at Bowling Green State University, it returns some talented upperclassmen, such as All-Mid-American Conference honorees Ali Bishel, Brittany Ade and Katie Johnson. But the team also has 17 freshmen on the roster.

FOOTBALL: Pair of Cards named Academic All-MAC

Kicker Ian McGarvey and wide receiver Briggs Orsbon were named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference team on Tuesday. Athletes must have played in at least 50 percent of their team's games and have at least a 3.2 GPA.

Ball State petitioned for the extra year for Lewis and tight end Madaris Grant after Grant tore his ACL on Opening Night against the University of North Texas. Lewis tore his ACL during his sophomore year in Ball State's 41-40 loss at the University of Nebraska.
