Despite losing in the quarterfinals of the Mid-American Conference Tournament, the Cardinals’ fight all season was enough to make head coach Brady Sallee proud.
This time last year, there was a different sense of hope for the Mid-American Conference and Ball State Men’s Basketball.
The lights dim in Worthen Arena. Ball State Men’s Basketball is coming off of a loss, and fans trickle out into the concourse as the players slowly walk off the court, disappearing into the tunnel.
In three consecutive games, the Cardinals have had a player score a career-high in points.
“Let’s go red,” senior guard Ishmael El-Amin said on the defensive end as he is clapping his hands.
Worthen Arena was silent. Not because of the lack of fans due to COVID-19, but because Ishmael El-Amin was at the free-throw line.
Similar to the Cardinals’ 75-62 loss to Bowling Green, Ball State Men’s Basketball (7-11, 5-8 MAC) led at halftime against Akron (14-4, 12-3 MAC).
It had been 10 days since the Cardinals had played a game due to postponements regarding COVID-19.
Ball State Women’s Volleyball’s Head Coach Kelli Miller Phillips' return did not leave her with the feeling she wanted.
Ball State Men’s Basketball was on a four-game losing streak. They had Toledo (16-5, 11-2 MAC) coming into town as the best team in the Mid-American Conference.
Both matches between Ball State and Toledo mirrored each other.
Physicality.
“There were times where we felt like we had the wide-receiver open and missed the final pass.”
The last time the Cardinals played a match was Dec. 6 of 2019.
In times of uncertainty and change, something that has remained stable is the roster of defending Mid-American Conference Champion Ball State Women’s Volleyball.
Turnovers and foul trouble.
Bowling Green (9-3, 5-1 MAC) was undefeated in the Mid-American Conference until they played Ball State Men’s Basketball (5-5, 3-2 MAC).
Many teams have had to deal with COVID-19 this season, and Ball State Men’s Basketball (4-5, 2-2 MAC) is no different.
The first 10 minutes of the game was enough to prevent Ball State Men’s Basketball (4-4, 2-1 MAC) from pulling out the win.
