MUNCIE, Ind.— Starting a season off well can lead to a great year, but starting a career well can lead to unforgettable performances.
Ball State freshman golfers Samuel Harris and Luke Johnston have started their college career by being named co-MAC Golfer of the week and by leading the Cardinals to a victory in the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational.
“Getting off to a good start to a college career is really important to me, and I'm glad that we got it done,” said Harris.
After Harris and Johnston both shot 12 under par at the Invitational, they helped the team notch a new program record for lowest score in a tournament with a score of 27 under par.
Johnston commented on helping the team break the record, saying, "It's a good feeling and being a part of that and playing to my expectations feels good.”
The freshmen are not the only underclassmen who are overwhelming the scorecards. Sophomore Gavin Hare boasted a second-place finish in The Indy at Forest Hills, which is his highest individual placement of his college career.
“When I'm playing my best, I don't think about much, I get into a good groove and try to find a state where I can keep swinging the club how I want to,” Hare said.
With a winter break in play forthcoming for the Cardinals, Hare is confident that the team can keep in top shape for when they open play again in February.
“We're really dedicated to getting better… and just keep in shape by competing, whether it's in practice drills or going out and playing against your buddies, I think that's the way to stay fresh.”
And the freshmen are taking the same approach.
“You just need to keep doing the right things, keep working hard every day and putting in the work, it's really the key to success,” Johnston explained.
With the good start to the underclassmen's careers, they are confident they can finish the season strong,
“I’m looking forward to having a big spring and being in contention of a MAC Championship,” Hare said.
