MUNCIE, Ind. – From a generation often forgotten is the very same generation that has helped build the community. Elders Angels has made it their mission to make sure that they aren’t forgotten within the community. Their goal is to support the elderly with the same love and compassion that they once gave to the community.
Mauriah Racer, the founder of Elders Angels, has been in the healthcare system since she was 15. After being exposed to the elderly population, she saw the need that was there and wanted to help make a change in that. Racer saw the number of seniors who didn’t have family, and around Christmas time, they were often forgotten. That was the start of Elders Angels.
“I’ve been able to see residents open the gifts that they get and see their faces light up, and just to know that someone has not forgotten about them, that they are loved, we are there for them. I think that’s the biggest thing. I just want to create a community of love that kind of surrounds the geriatric population. Because I think that is a community that is often forgotten about,” Mauriah said.
Racer's main goal is to make sure that the elderly community is met with love and support. These people were not only mothers and fathers, but also valuable contributors to society.
All of this wouldn’t be possible without the help of Mauriah’s mom, Sandra Racer, and the growing team of volunteers. Without their help, Elders Angels wouldn’t be able to do fundraisers like “Adopt a Grandparent.” The Fundraiser is a way for people to donate money, or they can go out and shop for their residents and get their needs and wants. Having the volunteers who donate money and help has helped the organization out in numerous ways.
Sandra Racer, mother of Mauriah Racer and Chairman of Elders Angels, has been a huge activist throughout the whole process and wants to bring awareness to other people.
“I think as a society we feel like when we feel like the people are just being taken care of in these facilities, it's you just feel like, oh, that’s where they are. They’re just when you hear that someone could use deodorant, that is just really kind of mind-blowing and so the goal is really to just bring awareness to other people that there are our elder population still has needs and these people are very vulnerable, and if they don’t have a family, it’s crazy what we take for granted,” Sarah said.
Elders Angels is working very hard to find the missing link between residents and the community. They continue to bring awareness and support to the elderly population with one care package at a time. They want residents to know that they are always loved, supported and that they are never forgotten.
