MUNCIE, Ind. – From the neighborhood of North Brady Street and Hughes Nature Preserve to Muncie’s Kitselman Gateway, the Cardinal Greenway is under construction as part of a final phase of a revitalization project that connects to White River Greenway. Additionally, levee construction for flood prevention is underway, along with the expansion of I-70 by INDOT, and routine railroad repairs.

The project aims to enhance connectivity, safety, and the overall user experience on the trail for all users and travelers. However, a few locals who live in Delaware County and near the trail share some mixed feelings about the construction and its impact on them.
Teejay, a local community member, says that he would like to know and learn more about the project before giving a final say on what it will do.
“I think the problem that we have is not enough awareness; we need to talk about it.” Teejay said. “Give us a reason to want the change, not just that we need it.”
On the other hand, Charles Wheat believes that the revitalization will be suitable for trailgoers for safety purposes, especially in the dark and/or at night.
“They are doing some actual decent work on it, as far as you know, keeping it on the upkeep. Our main thing is that we do need some lighting down the trails.” Wheat also said that at some points on the trail, when it would get dark, you wouldn’t possibly feel safe unless with a weapon for self-protection.
So far, there have been mixed reactions to the construction project on the Greenway, ranging from a need to know more about it and what it will accomplish to support for what it has achieved so far, as everyone waits for the revitalization project to come to a close.
