MUNCIE, Ind. –Ball State women's volleyball hosted a breast cancer awareness game this past weekend against the Ohio Bobcats. Fans were encouraged to wear pink to the game, and players wore pink attire to show their support for the cause. Pink stress balls were also passed out before the game to help build awareness for the cause.
For junior middle hitter Camryn Wise, this game was especially important to her because her mother has faced breast cancer in the past.
“It's cool to get to support something bigger than ourselves,” Camryn said, “Our team motto is serving others, so it was cool to be able to do that.”
After the game, coach Kelli Miller Philips spoke about the growth of the team and about the importance of events like this.
“It gives you that second breath to think about somebody and think about how cancer has affected so many people,” said Miller Philips.
Along with that, she also talked about how appreciative she is of the opportunities she has been given.
“I just really have an appreciation for what we get to do and be grateful for the opportunity to get to play,” Miller Philips added.
After falling short in the first two sets, Ball State took the last three, overcoming the Ohio Bobcats in reverse sweep fashion. The team had an impressive nine aces and blocks, seven of which came from Camryn Wise. Four Cardinals had double-digit kills, including Camryn Wise, Gwen Cull, Carson Tyler, and Noelle Vanoort. Along with that, sophomore Sophie Ledbetter tied for a match high with 18 digs.
The next day, the Cardinals faced a loss against the Bobcats, but they still lead the Mid-American conference with a record of 10 to 1 and a season record of 14 and 9.
