Ball State Women’s Rugby Club hosts Breast Cancer event

MUNCIE, Ind – October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Ball State Women’s rugby club hosted its second annual event in support of Breast Cancer.

This year, the club accepted donations for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Fans were encouraged to wear pink to the game.

“It was fantastic seeing everyone supporting wearing pink,” Oliva Chenery, one of the presidents of the club, said. “Last time it was only our team, so seeing other teams get the newsflash was fantastic.”

The game was more than wearing a different color on the pitch. The event was meant to show support for people and families affected by Breast Cancer.

“For the event, with the breast cancer research foundation that we are donating to, it’s mainly to go into researching and then showing support and making it known that this is an issue that we have,” Nevada Silsby-Inman said.

Silsby-Inman played a significant role in organizing the event. She said she was inspired because she has been affected herself.

“My mom passed away with cancer my senior year of high school,” Silsby-Inman said. “I went to college and I felt really lost, and I found this awesome community and I knew that I wanted to do something to honor her or at least increase research.”

Silsby-Inman said that she wants the event to grow and be able to offer support to families affected by Breast Cancer. She credits the community around the rugby club for helping her get through her mom’s death.

“The Ball State Women’s Rugby team has been with me through thick and thin,” Silsby-Inman said. “The support of my team, there’s always someone there to pick us up off our backs and tell you it’s okay.”
