Delaware County introduces new voting system

DELAWARE CO., Ind— Beginning with the May 2026 Primary Election, Delaware County voters are going to be able to hit the polls at any of 26 new voting centers. The locations were chosen based on accessibility and convenience for voters.

“That’s the purpose behind this…to make it convenient and easier on the population,” County Clerk Rick Spangler said. “We’re using our best sites for these 26 sites. We’re making these changes to emphasize the importance of voting.”

Due to bipartisan debate, it's been two decades since the topic has been in the air for Delaware County.

Spangler elaborated on the decision’s pace, “We couldn’t get the parties to agree to the locations, but finally we got it done.”

Spangler hopes that this decision will change the path of Delaware County’s low election turnouts. He also hopes to show the community more bipartisanship within their government.

He told me that when he ran for Clerk, 6 and a half years ago, his main goal was to put these voting centers in place. In an interview with the Star Press earlier this month, after the vote was unanimous, Spangler said “I think I can breathe.”

County Officials want voters to be able to have at least 1 of the 26 voting sites just a short drive away. Not only will the process be closer to you, it will be faster too. Spangler explains how the process is “easy and real fast”

Voters should come to one of the sites near them with a form of photo identification— like a driver’s license or a passport. There will be county officials like Clerk Spangler with ‘Poll Pads’ at the voting centers who will then register you. They can help you through the process as well if there are technical issues.

They want every person in the county to have the ability and opportunity to vote easily. For more information on how to prepare, what to bring, or where a site is near you visit in.gov/elections
