YORKTOWN, Ind. — Whether in the classroom or in a sport, a good teacher and coach is integral to successful learning. Adam Kuban fills both roles.
Kuban, professor at Ball State University, as well as head coach for the Yorktown Tigers Boys’ Tennis Team, speaks about one of his biggest hurdles: how he is able to manage his time throughout the day.
"I really have to be specific about how I manage my time, it's just bouncing from classes, to meetings and working with graduate students… Then I come out here and work with a bunch of teenagers for a couple of hours,” he explained.
Kuban is also looked upon fondly by his players.
“My favorite thing about my coach is that he is always trying to make us better… and he cares about us as people,” Aaron Buehler, a captain of Yorktown boys’ tennis, said.
Kuban’s teaching prowess stretches beyond the court, as he is also a full-time professor with a PhD at Ball State University.
“You come to this class to get challenged,” Jake Fesmire, a student of Kuban’s, said. “When you come into Kuban’s class, he wants his students to participate and to get better.”
And according to Ethan Hellems, a captain of Yorktown boys’ tennis, Kuban fits the bill of a good teacher and leader.
"My favorite thing about my coach is the way that he demonstrates stuff and the way he speaks his mind,” Hellems continued, “If we're doing something wrong, he will let us know what we are doing right."
