In a pair of seven-inning games that took place Wednesday night, the Ball State Cardinals mustered a sweep against Florida A&M University.
Ball State brought energy and effort to the field, coming off a 2-1 series win against Jacksonville earlier in the week. In that series, we saw the Cardinals walk away with a collective 20 runs.
Today, the team fell just short of 20, reaching 16 in not only one less game but ones with shortened innings as well.
In the first game, sophomore Blake Bevis continued to shine at the plate as he’s done all season. Coming off a successful prior series, the sophomore continued it today behind the plate, taking advantage of all three of his at-bats.
Junior Michael Hallquist contributed as well with a run, copying his solo homer from the previous series.
On the mound, freshman Keegan Johnson put on a show, pitching for five innings. Here, he produced four strikeouts and only two errors.
At the end of the first game, Ball State walked away with a 10-2 victory.
To start the second, this momentum carried.
Hallquist bat remained hot, securing two hits, one run and two RBIs. Senior Decker Scheffler followed the juniors lead, making three of four of his at-bats count, with two runs and one RBI.
Freshman Zach Kwasny had another good pitching performance on the season today, with five strikeouts and one error in just two innings pitched.
The Cardinals won this game 6-4.
While offensively the Cardinals produced in each game, their bats cooled after the 4th or 5th innings. Regardless, the power they were able to produce resulted in enough runs to secure them a sweep and earn them a record of 9-4.
Ball State will return to Muncie this Friday, March 8th at 1 p.m. to play Eastern Michigan University, marking their first home and Mid-American Conference (MAC) contest of the season. This game marks the start of a three-game series against Eastern, with the following two games against Eastern coming on the 9th and the 10th at 1 p.m.
Additionally, the Cardinals will remain home for another four games, marking a seven-game home stretch before they return to the road.
