After losing power, a container ship ran into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday, causing the bridge to collapse. Construction crew members and vehicles dropped into the water. Rescue workers pulled out two people but six remain missing and are now presumed dead, according to the Associate Press.

The ship's crew issued a mayday call before the collapse, which allowed for authorities to limit vehicle traffic on the bridge, according to Maryland Governor Wes Moore. With the speed of the ship, Moore said there was just enough time to stop cars from coming over the bridge.

"Those people are heroes," he said. "They saved lives last night."

The ship struck one of bridge’s supports, causing an immediate collapse. After hitting the bridge, the ship caught fire.
