Hoosier alliance holds vigil of mourning

MUNCIE, Ind. --- On March 1, a vigil was held at the Kennedy Library in Muncie to remember victims who lost their lives at the hands of family members or caregivers.

In the past five years, over 570 people with disabilities have lost their lives at the hands of family members and caretakers, according to the Autistic Self Advocacy Network. To remember the victims, Samuel Johnson, who is part of the Hoosier Alliance of Neurodiviresity, read aloud the names, ages and dates of death of all the victims.

“Disability Rights and Liberation Group based in Indiana specifically with Developmental and Neurological disabilities. So that would be autism, ADHD, Dyslexia,” said Johnson when explaining what the Hoosier Alliance is all about.

These organizations and people in the community have come together to send a message that disability is “not justification for violence.”
