Ball State men’s tennis wins 4-3 against Western Michigan

Yesterday, the Cardinals won 4-3 against the Broncos at the Northwest YMCA tennis courts.

The meet began with doubles play.

At No. 1 doubles, grad student Vince Orlando and junior Nathaniel Webster fell 2-6.

At No. 2 doubles, junior Mason Tran and sophomore Jacks Lancaster took their doubles match to a tiebreak, winning 7-6(6).

At No. 3 doubles, grad student Eli Herran and junior Sajin Smith won 6-2.

These victories earned Ball State the match doubles point.

As the meet transitioned to singles play, Ball State and Western Michigan clashed in an attempt to secure the win.

Webster fell in his singles match at No. 1 singles with a score of 0-6, 2-6.

At No. 4 singles, Tran fell with a score of 4-6, 3-6.

At No. 2 singles, Orlando battled with his opponent but lost in straight sets with a score of 3-6, 3-6.

At this point in the match, Ball State was down 3-1 and needed to win the remaining matches to defeat Western Michigan, which was playing in hopes of lengthening its win streak to 11.

At No. 3, Herran won his first set 6-2, lost his second set 2-6 and won his third set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (5).

Smith, at No. 6 singles, won in straight sets; winning the first 6-2 and winning the second in a tiebreak 7-6 (3). 

Ball State was tied with Western Michigan, 3-3 placing all eyes on the remaining singles play on Lancaster’s court.

Lancaster won in three sets at No. 5 singles, which gave the Cardinals the win. He lost his first set 4-6 but won his second 6-4 and his third set 6-3.

The Cardinals will be back in action against the Toledo Rockets on Friday, Mar. 29th at 1 p.m.
