Ball State closed out its fall campaign with a quality third round that sent the Cardinals three places up a volatile leaderboard that saw numerous out-of-state teams trading places in the rankings over the course of the three-day event.
“It was a really good way to finish the fall,” head coach Cameron Andry said. “It's the lowest single round score and the lowest tournament total score in our program's history.”
Throughout the event, the Cardinals’ sole senior, Kiah Parrott, led the team with a score of 7-under-par. Parrot’s combined tally of 209 was good for 6th on the individual leaderboard.
The Cardinals were dominant on par fives throughout the competition, leading all teams by a combined 24 strokes under par.
“That’s always been a point of emphasis for us,” Andry said. “It is one of the advantages that we have with the makeup and skillset of most of the players on the team."
Sunday - Round One
At the conclusion of the tournament’s opening day, Ball State landed near the center of the tournament’s leaderboard, finishing in 8th place.
It was the Cardinals’ individual golfer, sophomore Madelin Boyd, who had the best round of the day. Boyd finished with a career-best score of 69 (3-under-par).
Sophomore Jasmine Driscoll led Ball State at 1-under-par, followed by freshman JJ Gregston and Parrott, who both finished at even par.
Monday - Round Two
Parrot matched Ball State’s best score of day one with a score of 69, leading the Cardinals in an otherwise underwhelming second round.
Falling one place in the rankings, Ball State’s scoring was rounded out by Driscoll, who put in another solid round at even par.
Tuesday - Round Three
The final round provided the Cardinals with a chance to steal a top-five placement in the midst of a frequently changing leaderboard.
Ball State was able to creep into the top five numerous times throughout the round but came up just short in the end after Little Rock and Arkansas State both shored up initially rocky third-round performances to place the Cardinals one stroke out of 5th place.
“The golf course was surrendering some really good scores, but we took advantage of it,” Andry said. “There was a lot more to be encouraged about than there was to be disappointed about.”
Parrott was the headliner in the final round once again. The senior finished with a score of 68, her best individual showing of the three day affair.
Despite having the third best round of the day, the Cardinals would finish their trip to Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, in sixth place to round out their fall season.
“We are pretty young so I think it was important for everyone to get experience this fall,” Parrott said. “The spring season is even more challenging so we have to be ready, and I think everyone is in a good position to make this offseason a good one.”
Ball State women’s golf will return in the spring for the BGSU Invitational on Feb. 13, 2024.
