Ball State field hockey drops their first of two games in the Buckeye Invitational to Bucknell in overtime (2-1). The loss marks their third straight loss on the season as they drop to 0-3 on the year.
The Cardinals got off to a hot start as they scored quickly in the first period with an early goal from senior forward Paloma Gomez Rengifo off of an assist from sophomore forward Fluer Knopert. Ball State’s defense blanked the Bison 1-0 going into halftime, as senior goalie Hannah Johnston had a pair of saves throughout the game.
However, Bucknell pulled it together in the second half with junior Lily Nelson scoring the game-tying goal in the third period. With the goal, Ball State tried to capitalize and keep the momentum on their side by forcing the game to overtime tied at one apiece.
Bucknell got to start the overtime period with the ball and as the period went back and forth, the offensive woes reared their ugly heads for Ball State. The Cardinals did not register a single shot during the period as the Bison would ultimately come down to a penalty corner goal by Lily Nelson, ending in a defeat for the Cardinals.
“Unfortunately, things didn’t go our way..” head coach Caitlin Walsh said. “It sucks we’re upset but at the same time, we got to keep moving forward….. We’re coming back tomorrow to play another great team, [New Hampshire] is a very good team.. but I think just sticking to our gameplan and obviously we are going to watch film from our game today, [to] see where we can clean things up even more and get after it tomorrow.”
Ball State will stay in Columbus, Ohio as they get set for their final game in the Buckeye Invitational on Sunday, Sept. 3 against New Hampshire at 1 p.m.
