Delaware County sports results from 8/14-8/19

Here are highlights and results from this week’s Delaware County sporting events that the DN was able to attend. Email sports@bsudailynews.com with results or the high school beat reporter, Zach Carter at zachary.carter@bsu.edu.

Monday

The Delta girls golf team defeated Wapahani at Cardinal Hills Golf Club 170-203. Delta senior Belle Brown led the way with a 36 (medalist). She was followed by senior Avery Stinson with a 39. Senior Hollis Klinger fired a 42. The Raiders were led by junior Delaney Dodd with a 46. 

Tuesday 

The Delta girls golf team made back-to-back victories as they defeated Daleville 180-200 at Crestview Golf Club. Senior Belle Brown led the way with a 39 (medalist). Senior Hollis Klinger added a 41 to help the Eagles capture the win. Daleville was led by senior Addie Gick with a 41. 

The Yorktown girls soccer team started their season with a home victory as they defeated Blackford 5-0. Senior Nina Fischer and sophomore Clara McCammon both scored two goals. sophomore Harper Mitchell also scored a goal.

The Yorktown boys soccer team opened their season with an away 3-2 loss at Hamilton Heights. Senior Zach Wright and senior Ethan Guinn scored goals for the Tigers. In his opening start as keeper, junior Luke Diebold finished the night with 16 saves. 

The Wes-Del girls golf team shot a season best to defeat Alexandria 197-202. Freshman and Delaware County individual champion Jane Armington led the Warriors with a 33 (medalist). senior Abby Davis followed with a 49. 

Delta volleyball defeated Wapahani 3-1. Junior Addie Phillippe had 13 assists and 6 kills. Emily Reno had 4 aces and 11 kills. Sophomore Kate Manor had 6 aces. 

The Delta boys soccer team defeated Daleville 9-0. This was Delta head coach Tony Pierce’s first win with the Eagles.

Yorktown volleyball opened up its 2023 campaign with a 3-0 victory against Westfield. 

Wes-Del volleyball started its season with a 3-0 victory over Daleville. 

Cowan volleyball started its season with a 3-2 win against Winchester. 

The Cowan cross country teams competed at the Union for the Ethan Cheeseman CC Invitational. The boys team finished in second place. Senior Gavin Ashby finished second overall, and sophomore Aidan Glenn finished sixth. For the girls, senior Sarah Nichols finished fifth. 

Wapahani cross country competed at the Lapel Aaron Stephenson Invite Champions. The boys team went on to win the invite.

Wednesday

Wes-Del volleyball defeated Blueriver 3-0 in the Warriors home opener. 

The Yorktown girls golf team defeated Muncie Central at the Players Club.

Daleville volleyball defeated Cowan 3-0. 

The Delta girls golf team split their three way match. Mount Vernon came in first with a 180, Delta followed with a 184, and Shenandoah rounded out the three with a 223. Delta senior Belle Brown was the medalist with a 36. Senior Avery Stinson followed with a 45. 

The Wapahani girls golf team defeated Daleville 207-210 at Crestview Golf Club. sophomore Kenzie Brannon led the Raiders with a personal best 43. Daleville senior Addy Gick was the medalist with a 42. 

Thursday 

Delta volleyball defeated Jay County 4-1. Senior Olivia Morris, Emily Reno, junior Addie Philippe, and sophomore Maddie Grove all had kills in the double digits. Sophomore Kate Manor recorded nine digs and four aces. 

Burris volleyball defeated Monroe Central 3-0 in the Owls season opener. 

Burris boys soccer defeated Richmond 3-1. The Owls were down by one in the opening minute. But two minutes later, they regained the lead and were able to hold off the Red Devils. Senior Asher Donahue scored two goals and junior Spencer McKinney scored one goal. Goalkeeper sophomore Rees Cook ended the game with ten saves. 

Friday 

Burris volleyball defeated Liberty Christian 4-2. 

Yorktown football started its season with a 55-6 home win over Anderson. Senior Ayden Ewing led the Tigers with 93 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns. Senior quarterback Mason Moulton went 15-for-27 with 253 passing yards and four touchdown passes. 

Wes-Del football fell to Alexandria in its season opener 49-12. Senior quarterback Triton Blevins went 5-for-13 and had 46 passing yards. Senior Trey Adams and freshman Tecumseh Dyer each had one rushing touchdown.

Saturday

The Delta girls soccer team defeated Mississinawa 2-1. This was the first win for head coach Mason Turner.  

The Delta girls golf team, Wes-Del, Yorktown, Wapahani, and Daleville all competed in the Monroe Central Invite. Delta won the tournament, Daleville came in second, Yorktown was third, Wapahani was fifth, and Wes-Del came in sixth. Delta senior Belle Brown was the individual champion with a 77. Wes-Del freshman Jane Armington finished in third with a 78. 

Both junior varsity and varsity Burris volleyball teams won the Madison Grant Invite. 

Daleville cross country competed in the meet. The boys finished in second. Austin Hartzell finished in seventh place and was followed by Colin Elam in eighth. The girls finished in sixth. Payton Brown finished in 21st and Kinley Murray came in 29th.
