Delaware County High School Regular Season Football opens August 19

August 19, four Delaware County High School varsity football programs opened up their regular season. Muncie Central High School and Delta High School clashed in a contest that came down to the final minute, Yorktown High School picked up their first win of the season and Wes-Del was defeated in their home opener.

In an inter-county matchup, the Delta Eagles (1-0) defeated the Muncie Central Bearcats (0-1) at Muncie Central 34-28 in each program's regular season opener. Delta scored three touchdowns in the first half, two courtesy of senior Palmer Samuels and one from senior Caleb Elliot.

Muncie Central senior Josiah Ullom scored on a kick-off return to give the Bearcats their only touchdown of the first half. At halftime, Delta had a 20-7 lead over Muncie Central, and the score remained the same through the third quarter.

However, in the fourth quarter, both the Bearcats and Eagles scored multiple touchdowns, the first of which coming courtesy of a rush from Elliot, his second touchdown of the night. Shortly after, Muncie Central senior quarterback Trenton French threw a 58 yard touchdown to junior wide reciever Demarkis Cole to put the score at 26-14.

A little over three minutes afterward, the two connected for a touchdown again, this time a 71 yarder. With the score at 26-21 and less than three minutes to play, Samuels rushed for his third and final touchdown of the game, extending Delta's lead to 34-21 after the successful two point conversion.

With less than two minutes remaining, Bearcat junior DJ Hollinsworth rushed for a touchdown, putting the game at 34-28 after the successful PAT. That said, time ran out for Muncie Central, as Delta held on for the victory.

The Eagles take the field 7 p.m. August 26 in their home opener against Columbia City High School Varsity Football (1-0). Muncie Central hits the road to take on Yorktown High School (1-0) the same day and time.

Yorktown High School Varsity Football V. Anderson High School Varsity Football

In the first regular season game of the 2022 campaign for either team, the Yorktown Tigers defeated the Anderson Indians (0-1) 20-0 on the road. After a scoreless first quarter, the Tigers put up 13 points in the second.

The first score came with eight minutes remaining in the second quarter, as senior quarterback Blair Webster connected with senior wide reciever Brayden Foltz for a 25 yard touchdown pass. Senior Kolton Nanko proceeded to kick a successful extra point to make it 7-0 Tigers.

With under a minute remaining in the first half, Nanko rushed for a one yard touchdown to put the score at 13-0 Yorktown, though the Tigers failed to successfully convert the two point attempt.

After a quiet third quarter, Yorktown scored for the final time with seven minutes to go in the fourth quarter, a 21 yard rushing touchdown by junior Jalen Thomas.

The Tigers are back in action at 7 p.m. August 26 in their home opener against Muncie Central (0-1).

Wes-Del High School Varsity Football V. Clinton Prarie High School Varsity Football

The Wes-Del Warriors (0-1) fell to the Clinton Prarie Gophers (1-0) 46-6 at home, in the first game of the season for either program. The Warriors scored in the first quarter, a passing touchdown from junior quarterback Triton Blevins to junior wide reciever Trey Adams, however, Wes-Del was held scoreless in the final three quarters of play.

The Warriors return to the field 7 p.m. August 26 on the road against Tri-Central High School Varsity Football (0-1).
