June 4 Delaware County High School Sports Roundup: Regional Champion crowned among other notable sporting events

June 4, Delaware County High Schools were represented in baseball, softball, girls' tennis and track & field events across the state of Indiana. Results can be found below:

Wapahani High School Baseball Regionals

June 4, the Wapahani Raiders (24-4) won their eighth Regional Championship in program history, defeating Carroll High School (Flora) (26-2) 11-3 at Carroll High School (Flora). No stats were provided for this contest. 

To reach the Regional Championship game, Wapahani defeated Eastern High School (23-8) 9-3 earlier in the day (June 4). No stats were provided for this contest either. 

The Raiders are now scheduled to face Illiana Christian High School (20-7) in Semi-State June 11 at 1 p.m. in Kokomo, Indiana. 

Boys’ Track & Field State Finals

In the 2022 Boys’ Track & Field State Finals in Bloomington, Indiana, June 4, Delta High School Track & Field earned points in two events. 

In the Long Jump, Delta junior Abram Stitt finished third place with a distance of 22 (feet)-11 (inches). This feat earned the Eagles (Delta) seven points. 

In the Boys 4x400 Meter Relay, Delta’s tandem of Stitt, junior Luke Wray, senior Johnathan Chimbanda and junior Quinn Backus finished sixth with a time of 3:21.27, a school record. This accomplishment earned Delta four points. 

The Eagles finished tied for 19th out of 74 with 11 total points. 

Delta High School Girls’ Tennis State Semifinals

After defeating Oldenburg Academy 3-2 June 3, Delta Girls’ Tennis looked to advance to the State Championship as they faced Fishers High School June 4 at Center Grove High School. The Eagles were unsuccessful, as Fishers defeated Delta 5-0. 

In No. 1 Singles, Fishers’ Misha Briggs defeated Delta senior Gwendolyn Clark 6-0, 6-1. In No. 2 Singles, Fishers’ Izzy Mokra beat Delta sophomore Gabby Knight 6-4, 6-0. In No. 3 Singles, Fishers’ Caroline Ober defeated Delta freshman Brylee Beckley 6-0, 6-1.

In No. 1 Doubles, Fishers’ Emma Beehler and Cassie Maurer Fishers beat Delta senior Maggie Hunt and junior Janet Wegener 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. In No. 2 Doubles, Fishers’ Madelyn Barron and Meredith Ober defeated Delta senior Madelyn Haley and junior Iva Witter Delta 6-0, 6-3. 

Despite the loss, Clark won the State Mental Attitude Award after the conclusion of the State Finals.

Cowan High School Softball Semi-State Semifinals

June 4, the Cowan Blackhawks (16-9) were unsuccessful in their attempt to win their first Semi-State Championship in program history, as they lost in the Semi-State Semifinals to South Central High School (23-6), 9-4 in Frankfort, Indiana. 

This contest went to extra innings, tied at four until South Central scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning and the Blackhawks failed to answer in the bottom of the inning. Cowan junior McKenna Minton hit 2-4 with two RBI. 

Senior Lauren Smith and junior Aryonna Bynum each had two hits for the Blackhawks, whereas junior Josie Byrd and freshman Kaylee Belcher each had one RBI. 

Yorktown High School Softball Semi-State Semifinals

In an attempt to win their third Semi-State Championship in program history, Yorktown High School Softball (25-4) fell 2-0 to the eventual champion, South Bend St. Joseph (27-3) June 4 at Twin Lakes. Earlier in the 2022 season, the Tigers (Yorktown) defeated South Bend St. Joseph, but could not do so a second time. 

Stats were not provided for this game.

Cowan High School Baseball Regionals

Cowan (16-10) could not win their second Regional Championship in a row, as the Blackhawks lost to Rossville High School (18-13) 11-1 June 4 at Lafayette Central Catholic High School.
