Fire Safety Do's and Dont's

If you are going to be cooking for a large group of people, it is always a good idea to have fire watch guards on hand. This person will be responsible for ensuring that all the food is cooked properly and that there is no danger of a fire starting. They will also help with any evacuation plans that need to be put into place should a fire break out.

If you cannot have fire watch guards on hand, it is important to take precautions while cooking. Do not leave food cooking on the stove unattended, and make sure that there is plenty of space between the stovetop and any cabinets or furniture. Keep a close eye on pots and pans that are boiling or simmering, and never use an oven or stovetop to heat your home. Ensure that all kitchen appliances are turned off when you are finished using them and do not overload electrical outlets with plugs. By taking these simple precautions, you can help reduce the risk of a kitchen fire.

Fire Safety in the Home

The best way to prevent a fire in your home is to be prepared. Install smoke alarms on every level of your home and outside sleeping areas, and test them monthly. Develop a fire escape plan and practice it with your family. Know how to safely use a fire extinguisher, and keep flammable materials, such as matches and lighters, in a safe place. Close all doors when you leave a room to help contain the fire, and exit your home quickly and calmly if there is a fire.
