Following the departure of Ball State men’s basketball head coach James Whitford, standout freshman center Payton Sparks announced via a Twitter post that he intends to enter the transfer portal.

“I would like to thank Ball State University, Coach Whitford, Coach [Ben] Botts and the entire coaching staff for the opportunity to play here at Ball State,” Sparks said in his post. “... Now, not knowing who the new coach will be, I feel it is best for me to test the waters and enter the transfer portal.”

Sparks was named Mid-American Conference (MAC) freshman of the year and selected to the All-MAC third team after averaging 13.5 points and 8.5 rebounds a game for the Cardinals.

While not wanting to close the door at Ball State, Sparks’ goal is to figure out what is best for his future.
