Rotated Cardinals sweep Quincy

Before its two week hiatus from the court, Ball State Men’s Volleyball (11-2, 5-1 MIVA) secured one more victory in its home sweep over Quincy University (3-9, 0-6 MIVA) by scores of 25-22, 25-17 and 25-19 respectively Feb. 25.

In what head coach Donan Cruz said was a recovery-focused move, the Cardinals played a heavily rotated lineup. Junior setter David Flores and junior libero Sammy Adkisson each made their first starts of the season.

“We got some guys on the court [tonight] that we have been wanting to see what they look like and for us was it was just a really good opportunity to get a good win at home 3-0,” Cruz said. “Proud of Dave [Flores for] coming in as one of our captains that doesn't get an opportunity to get in the game alot. [He] really showed what he can do.”

With senior outside attacker Kaleb Jenness out of the lineup, junior outside attacker Bryce Behrendt led Ball State's attack with 10 kills as senior outside attacker Nick Martinski and sophomore opposite hitter Dyer Ball chipped in nine and eight kills.

“Something on the court was just different,” Flores said. “They really helped me right off the bat when I was kind of struggling. It's really easy to play with these guys when the court.”

Flores acted in graduate student setter Quinn Isaacson’s place, serving up 34 assists and tallying four blocks – tied with freshman middle blocker Vanis Buckholz. Martinski had a team-high 10 digs.

Over their break, Ball said the Cardinals will be focused on resting the slight injuries and getting back in the grove.

“A lot of rest,” Ball said. “Next week we have a couple [of] practices to ease us into that long break. I think we’ll come out in a good atmosphere.”

Ball State returns to the floor March 11 as its travels to Newark, N.J. to play New Jersey Institute of Technology (8-3, 31 AEC). First set is 6 p.m.
