Ball State Field Hockey (4-12, 2-4 MAC) fell to VCU (10-5, 4-2 A-10), 4-0 Sunday afternoon.
The Cardinals were finishing a long weekend on the road, having played the last two games in Virginia. VCU came out the gate aggressive on the offensive side of the field totaling 10 shots in the first quarter alone, with two finding the back of the net. In the second quarter, they scored one more goal.
Here are three takeaways from the Cardinals’ loss:
Defense picked up
Ball State was more aggressive and focused on defense in the second half by only allowing seven shots in the whole second half compared to the 16 in the first half. One of those shots was a goal. The defense, however, also gathered 45 fouls in comparison to VCU’s 32.
Sophomore Goalkeeper Hannah Johnston led the way with 11 saves.
Offensive struggles
On the other hand, the Cardinals offense was only able to get three shots total with all three coming in the third quarter. Freshman Forward Agostina Giudice led the team with two shots and one on goal.
Fourth straight loss
The Cardinals have now dropped their fourth straight game and eight of the last 10, having scored one goal or less in each of those contests. They are now sixth in Mid-American Conference play with only one more game until the tournament.
Ball State finishes their regular season with a game against leader Kent State (11-5, 5-1 MAC) on Saturday, Oct. 30 at Briner Sports Complex. The Mid-American Conference tournament starts the following weekend.
