Ball State Women’s Golf travelled to Colorado and finished in sixth place overall at the Col Wollenberg Ram Classic Tuesday.
Sophomore Hadley Moritz led the Cardinals with a personal performance that landed her tied for fourth place. Despite starting off with a 76 in her first round, Moritz bounced back with her best score of 71 coming in the second round.
“Hadley’s game is solid, and this was a tremendous finish for her,” head coach Katherine Mowat said. “She hits the ball far and took advantage of the thin Colorado air. She rolled the ball well on the greens and just as important, had a great mental game.”
Moritz finished the tournament Tuesday by shooting a 73. This placed her 4-over-par and tied five ways for fourth place. This was Moritz’s first top-five finish and her second top-10 finish of the season.
“My top-five finish has brought me a great amount of confidence,” Moritz said. “This was a competitive field, and I am encouraged knowing I was right in the mix of the top players.”

After a slow start with a team score of 306 in the first round Monday, the Cardinals stayed in contention with a 302 in the second round. Ball State headed into the championship round in sixth place as a team.
Although the Cardinals jumped around in the rankings Tuesday, they shot a final round score of 300 to keep them where they started in sixth.
Having to travel to Colorado and adjust to the conditions proved to be a challenge for Ball State. With climate and elevation changes, the golfers had to quickly adapt to a new playing style.
“Playing at altitude was a new experience for most of my players,” Mowat said. “The greens were firm and fast, and the course was a different style from what we are accustomed to.”
This field of competition was the most difficult test of the season for the Cardinals thus far. Of the 13 total teams, five are placed within the top 100 nationally. On top of that, this tournament was the third in a row with no more than a couple of days break between each.
“I feel we all became smarter and more versatile golfers for having played in this event,” Mowat said. “We just finished three tournaments in a row, so we are looking forward to a longer break before our next event.”
The Cardinals will hit the links again Oct. 7-8 at the Silver Lake Shootout in Ohio.
