Every January, the Charles W. Brown Planetarium hosts family month, where they feature two family shows Fridays and Saturdays. All of the showings are free to the public, and families are welcome to bring members of all ages.
Those at the planetarium suggest arriving 15 minutes early to any showing as seats are first-come, first-serve. Shows will last 35-40 minutes each.
Below are the two shows that will play each weekend in January.
One World, One Sky: Big Bird’s Adventure and Earth, Moon and Sun
5:30 p.m. Fridays and 2:30 p.m. Saturdays Jan. 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19
In this family friendly show, Sesame Street’s Big Bird and Elmo will explore the stars in the night sky with Hu Hu Zhu from China. This “cross-cultural” adventure is meant to help children see how they are connected to people all over the world and get a taste of how different other planets are from the Earth. Those from the planetarium said families with children in preschool through second grade with enjoy this show, but anyone can take part in the activities.
Earth, Moon and Sun
6:30 p.m. Fridays and 3:30 p.m. Saturdays Jan. 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19
During the family-oriented show, Coyote, a character created from Native American oral traditions, will learn about how the Earth, moon and sun work together as a system. The show will also help clarify myths about the system for viewers. By the end, guests will have a basic understanding of fusion, solar energy and why the sun rises and sets. Those from the planetarium said families with children in second through fifth grade will enjoy this show, but anyone can take part in the activities.
