Autumn at Ball State typically smells like freshly fallen leaves, hot food from dining halls and coffee for late nights in Bracken Library.

But on Wednesday, campus took on a new scent — a barn, ready to be mucked out.

Students took to Twitter when they noticed the foul smell.

It’s unclear at this point whether the stench emanated from campus or somewhere else in Muncie. Both students and those off campus tweeted about the smell.

It’s also unknown what caused the smell, though some on Twitter mentioned a fertilizer-like manure smell.

Michael Planton, the Associate Director for Landscape and Environmental Management, was out of the office Wednesday afternoon when The Daily News called.
