Ball State Athletics were in full swing this past weekend with three different teams in action. Here's what you missed.

Friday

  • Women’s Volleyball kicked-off their weekend in Dayton, Ohio for the Dayton Invitational. The first matchup of the invitational saw the Cardinals go down to the wire with South Alabama. In a deciding game five, the Cardinals took the match, 3-2. Senior Ellie Dunn recorded 17 kills and junior Amber Seaman recorded 40 assists.

“We maintained serving and passing pressure very well,” head coach Kelli Miller said. “Passing was consistent and the girls did a nice job of playing their roles and staying composed throughout the match. They really kept with it and fought hard.”

  • Field Hockey opened up their 2018 season just over the border in Oxford, Ohio facing Saint Francis. Stephanie Bernthal also made her debut as the head coach for the Cardinals. Three quick goals in the first 20 minutes proved to be too much as the Cardinals would fall to the Red Flash, 4-0.
  • Soccer was on the road in Kentucky for weekend matchups against Eastern Kentucky on Friday and Morehead State on Sunday. The Cardinals found themselves in a hole early as the Colonels would score a goal in the first five minutes. While the Cardinals did outshoot the Colonels 14 to six, they could not find the back of the net and would fall to EKU, 1-0.

“We are looking for them to convert their opportunities and to stick with the project of us improving,” head coach Craig Roberts said. “My emphasis on them is to make improvements on areas we talk about. If they do that, the result will be respective in the way that we are making progress and getting better.”

Saturday

  • In the conclusion to the Dayton Invitational, the Cardinals would spilt their matches on the day falling to Dayton, 3-1, and sweeping Marshall, 3-0. Against the Flyers, junior Kate Avila recorded 28 digs and Seaman lead the Cardinals in assists and blocks with 43 assists and three blocks. Facing Marshall, the Cardinals dominated throughout sweeping the Thundering Herd, 25-20, 25-21 and 25-15. Seaman once again led in the assists category with 34 and Dunn would lead in kills with 13. The Cardinals finished 3-1 on the weekend and overall.

“I really liked how the girls were able to help each other out and facilitate scoring opportunities in important spots of the game,” head coach Kelli Miller said. “I think we learned even in the loss, how to communicate better and make better decisions when things get tight in the game.”

Sunday

  • Looking to get back on track, Field Hockey returned back to Muncie to take on in-state foe, Indiana. Two goals from the Hoosiers, within a minute of each other, would prove to be too much to the Cardinals and they would fall to IU, 2-0. Sophomore Grace Chavez made five saves on seven shots in the loss. The Cardinals drop to 0-2 on the season
  • Soccer wrapped up their weekend across the Ohio river in Kentucky facing Morehead State. The Cardinals proved to be dominate throughout as they would outshoot the Eagles, 13 to 5. In overtime, freshman Jenna Dombrowski would head in the game winner for the 1-0 win and give the Cardinals their second win of the season. The Cardinals improve to 2-1-0.

"I'm really proud of our team. I thought the girls improved on the things we addressed from the previous game and put together a complete effort," head coach Craig Roberts said in a press release. "Morehead State is a well-organized team and their goalkeeper played an incredible match. It was a stalemate until we finally scored. The girls really grew today."
