Residence halls are about to break the tradition of male- and female-only roommate housing options.

In an email sent to campus Tuesday, Alan Hargrave, the director of Housing and Student Life, said gender-neutral housing is available to any students who are “respectful of gender identity issues” starting Fall 2018.

According to the email, 60 bed spaces with private bathrooms will be reserved for students who have “mutually-confirmed” with their roommates that they want to live in gender-neutral housing.

Hargrave said in the email Ball State’s decision aligns with the Beneficence Pledge and makes the university “competitive in the marketplace” when compared to other schools nationwide.

The new housing setup will be evaluated in the summer of 2019.
