This Thursday, Canan Commons will host the annual Light Up DWNTWN event to kick off the shopping season and give the community a chance to enjoy lights, music and food.
Light Up DWNTWN, which is open to everyone, is a 19-year-old tradition held annually on the first Thursday of December to bring community members together.
Natalie Glidewell, the Cardinal Communications Light Up DWNTWN event promotions support, has attended the event twice and said it is an excellent opportunity for students to de-stress and take a break from preparing for finals.
“If students missed the Circle of Lights ceremony in downtown Indy, or the tree lighting in their hometown, this is a great event to get that same experience and get in the holiday spirit,” Glidewell said.
From 5-8 p.m., visitors can buy from local businesses and vendors, watch ice carving demonstrations, make s'mores and more. There will also be a Kiddie Express train and performances from elementary school choirs and carolers throughout the night.
At 6 p.m., Mayor Dennis Tyler and President Geoffrey S. Mearns will lead the countdown to the lighting of the tree by Charlie Cardinal and Santa.
Cheryl Crowder, director of events for Muncie Downtown Development, said there are plenty of things to do at this event.
“We want to make sure everyone feels they’ve been invited to downtown for something at some point during the year,” Crowder said. “There’s always an invitation out there, but this one especially is a good one.”

Delta will be on the road for its next contest against Hoosier Heritage Conference rival Shelbyville April 23 at 6 p.m. Muncie Central will travel to Muncie Burris for its next matchup, also April 23 at 6 p.m.
