Ball State men's tennis wrapped up the final round of competition at the Old Gold and Black Invite on Sunday. The Cardinals went 3-3 in doubles matches against Purdue, IUPUI and Butler.

In doubles action on Sunday, the pair of freshman Khamasi Muhiga and sophomore Luke Wiese went 2-1, while Carney and Rigney went 1-2. Carney and Rigney finished runner-ups in the Flight D final.

Head coach Bill Richards said the weekend was very productive and it served it’s purpose.

“We wanted to get our guys, who couldn’t get to play Regionals, extra matches and that’s exactly what we got,” Richards said.

In singles matches against IUPUI, junior Tom Carney and Rigney won their matches. Carney defeated freshman Eric Hollingsworth (7-5, 6-4), while Rigney faced junior Grant Weaver (6-3, 6-1).

On Friday night against Butler, the lone win came from junior Collin Rigney against freshman Addison Cazier (6-3, 7-5).

In the final singles matches against Purdue on Saturday night, Rigney was the only Cardinal to win. Rigney won on a withdraw from senior Renan Hanayama.

Out of the four players competing this weekend, Carney and Rigney turned in their best performances. Richards said this weekend fit in well with Rigney’s student teaching schedule.

“Rigney played well in spite of his schedule this fall,” Richards said.

The team will have Tuesday and Wednesday for practices and will travel to Kalamazoo, Mich. for the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships this weekend.
