Ball State men's tennis closes out fall season with three top finishers at MAC indoor

Ball State men's tennis closed out its last tournament of the fall this afternoon at the Mid-American Conference indoor. The Cardinals finished with seven players in the top 10 of their flights. 

Two highlights from singles play were junior Marko Guzina finishing second in Flight 2 and sophomore Luke Wiese winning Flight 6.

In flight 2, Guzina faced junior Vincent Anzalone and won in two sets (6-2, 6-0) and finished in fifth place overall. In the second match, Guzina had lost the first set (1-6) against junior Eric Olivarez from Western Michigan. Guzina was able to come back and won both the second and third sets (7-6, 6-4).

In the championship match against sophomore Jannik Optiz from Western Michigan last year, Optiz finished 6-0 against other MAC opponents in singles play. However, this year, Guzina lost both of the sets (6-3, 6-4), but still finished second.

Another highlighted player was Wiese, who won his first two matches, while only losing one set against junior Juan Carranza from Toledo. In the championship match against senior Billy Heckman, Wiese won it in two sets (6-4, 7-6).

A pair of of doubles players that contributed to Ball State's 9-6 doubles record was junior Tom Carney and senior Jon Jirus. The duo faced Carranza and senior Stephen Miller in the first match, recording a 8-1 victory. In the championship of Flight 3, the pair won against junior Luka Vitosevic from Toledo and freshman Victor Spolidorio from Northern Illinois (8-4). 

The team will face Indiana on Jan. 15 for the spring season opener.
