From performances at Carnegie Hall to a prison in Alaska, the Saint Lawrence String Quartet has visited several locations, and on Thursday, it will be coming to Ball State University.

The Saint Lawrence String Quartet will perform at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 2 at Sursa Performance Hall as part of the Arts Alive! Concert Series, which features three live concerts a year from a variety of artists.

"Arts Alive! is a way for us to bring in international-level talent at a reduced price," said Ryan Hourigan, director of the Ball State School of Music. "You won't hear groups like these for these prices."

Geoff Nuttall, first violinist in the quartet, said this performance will be a “quirky, weird and powerful program that sums up why [classical music is] the best art form in western civilization.”

The first piece the quartet will play is one that Nuttall said does not receive enough credit.

“It’s an incredible musical journey that starts with a cello solo, a crazy second movement that goes from dark to light and everything in between,” Nuttall said. “It’s one of those perfect pieces that can’t get any better.”

Nuttall said the performance will also include a piece that is “wild” with rapid changes in tempo and dynamics and will conclude with a piece that is an “incredible, romantic outburst.”

Because of the range of emotion portrayed in the pieces, Nuttall encourages students of all majors to enjoy the performance.

“Great music needs no preparation in terms of study in order to be moved — all you have to do is listen,” Nuttall said.
