Ball State football vs. Central Michigan quarter updates

First quarter

Ball State wins the toss and elects to receive.

The Cardinals start on their 25-yard line after the opening kickoff goes for a touchback but go three-and-out. Freshman Nathan Snyder's punt takes a bad bounce and Central Michigan takes over on Ball State's 46-yard line.

The Chippewas convert on two third downs to set up sophomore running back Jonathan Ward's 16-yard touchdown run that put Central Michigan ahead 7-0.

Ball State goes three-and-out again, and Snyder's punt takes another Central Michigan bounce.

The Chippewas start on Ball State's 49-yard line and get a first down but the drive stalls.

The Cardinals start on their own 20 after the punt goes for a touchback. Ball State's offense finally gets going when freshman running back Markice Hurt Jr. takes a swing pass for a 24-yard gain. Junior kicker Morgan Hagee caps the 11-play, 57-yard drive with a 40-yard field goal to make it 7-3.

Central Michigan starts on its own 20 after a short return. Senior receiver Mark Chapman takes a screen pass for a 66-yard touchdown, but it's called back on a holding penalty. Redshirt senior defensive end sacks Central Michigan quarterback Shane Morris on third-and-5 as time expires in the quarter.

Second quarter

The Chippewas start the quarter on fourth-and-10 from their own 32-yard line, and junior Jack Sheldon's punt only goes 13 yards.

Ball State starts on Central Michigan's 45-yard line but can only muster a 41-yard field goal. The Chippewas lead is cut to 7-6.

Central Michigan and Ball State trade a pair of three-and-outs.

Chippewas sophomore running back Romelo Ross breaks off a 30-yard run on the next drive to move into Cardinals territory. Morris connects with senior tight end Tyler Conklin for a 34-yard touchdown to make it 14-6.

Ball State goes three-and-out.

Central Michigan scores again, this time on a 31-yard touchdown pass from Morris to senior receiver Corey Willis.

Ball State gets a first down, but the drive fizzles. Snyder's punt is blocked by sophomore Jerrod Davis, and redshirt freshman Tee'ondre Harvey takes it back to the Cardinals' 12-yard line. The Chippewas increase their lead to 28-6 when Ward punches in a three-yard touchdown run.

The Cardinals move into Chippewas territory on the next drive, but time runs out and the half ends.

Central Michigan will receive to begin the second half.

Third quarter

Winbush forces a fumble on the first play from scrimmage and sophomore safety Lamar Anderson recovers it.

Ball State starts on Central Michigan's 30-yard line, but can't get into the end zone. Hagee hits his third field goal of the day, this one a 43-yarder, to make it 28-9.

The Chippewas go three-and-out.

The Cardinals drive into Chippewas territory but Milas is sacked on fourth-and-4 from Central Michigan 32-yard line.

Central Michigan extends its lead to 35-9 on a 63-yard pass from Morris to Willis.

Ball State goes three-and-out.

The Chippewas drive to the Cardinals' 30-yard line, but on fourth-and-2 redshirt freshman running back Kumehnnu Gwilly is stopped for a one-yard gain.

Redshirt sophomore quarterback Zack Blair replaces Milas and runs two plays before the quarter ends.

Fourth quarter

Ball State pins Central Michigan on its own 16, but the Chippewas drive into the red zone. Morris and Willis connect on a 4-yard touchdown pass to make it 42-9.

Blair fumbles on the Cardinals' next play from scrimmage. Chippewas defensive back Sean Bunting forces the fumble and recovers it before pitching the ball to redshirt freshman Alonzo McCoy, who scored a touchdown to make it 49-9.

Ball State moves into Central Michigan territory on the next drive but punts.

Gwilly scores a 33-yard touchdown for the Chippewas on the next drive to make it 56-9.

Ball State drives down to Central Michigan's 32-yard line, but time expires. The Chippewas win 56-9.
