In just the 28th minute of the game, Xavier's Samantha Dewey moved past Ball State's defense to score what became the game-deciding goal in today's game.

Ball State (1-2-0) suffered a 1-0 loss to Big East foe Xavier (2-1-0) this evening at the XU Soccer Complex.

Although the Cardinals out-shot the Musketeers by a 16-11 margin, not one of those shots on goal were able to get past Xavier goal keeper Toni Bizzarro, to give her eight saves on the day.

Xavier shut down a loud Ball State offense in the 34th minute, after Bizzarro saved looks from sophomore midfielder Peighton Cook and junior forward Amanda Shaw. After a deflected attempt by senior midfielder Allison Abbe, the Cardinals failed to apply a lot of pressure the rest of the game.

Cook finished with two shots, while Shaw finished with four total shots and two shots on goal. Junior forward Evie Stepaniak and sophomore forward Sam Kambol each added three shots their own.

Ball State struggled early with defense, but picked it up as the game went on. Senior goalkeeper Alyssa Heintschel made five saves for the Cardinals, as only one ball moved past her off the cross bar.

Tonight's loss and Sunday's loss to Notre Dame make that back-to-back defeats for the first time since early last season, where the Cardinals responded with a school-record 10-game win streak.

Ball State will return to Muncie to host Appalachian State (0-2) on Sunday. First touch is scheduled for noon at Briner Sports Complex.
