Ball State women’s tennis came through a few tough singles matches in its 6-1 victory over the Oakland Golden Grizzlies this afternoon at the Northwest YMCA in Muncie.

It was a strong start on all courts from the Cardinals in the doubles contests. Julia Sbircea and Rosa Calderon continued their recent good form with a 6-2 victory over Alexandra Whall and Marija Milic.

It was the same result on Court 2 as Isabelle Dohanics and Toni Ormond beat Daria Artamonova and Amanda Nilsson, 6-2. They were up 5-0 but ran into some trouble when closing out the match. Fortunately for the Cardinals, they managed to stop an Oakland comeback attempt. The match was highlighted by some exciting rallies which, for the most part, Ball State came out on top of.

Court 3 saw a much tighter match between Ball State’s Audrey Berger and Rebecca Herrington and Oakland’s Allison Motea and Sofia Borcuti. Oakland went up 2-1 early, but the Cardinals came back with a 3-2 lead and never trailed after, winning 6-4.

This perhaps signaled what was to come for the Cardinals in the singles.

In order to get the overall victory, Ball State managed to get the minimum three points needed to clinch the match early on. Berger was the first to finish and win on Court 4 as she beat Nilsson 6-3, 6-0.

Then, next to her on Court 6, Calderon followed through with another win, triumphing 6-1, 6-2 over Sofia Miller. The third match to finish was, funnily enough, on Court 3, as Ormond convincingly beat Whall 6-2, 6-2.

However, it wasn’t as plain sailing for the other matches. All three women involved lost their first set.

Dohanics took the game to a match breaker, but fell to Oakland’s Artamonova who would prevail, 6-4, 3-6, 10-8.

It was better news on the other two courts which started with a set loss for Ball State. Court 1 saw a more vocal than usual Peyton Gollhofer bounce back from the first set to win 3-6, 6-4, 10-4. Julia Sbircea also turned things around on Court 5, winning 4-6, 6-4, 10-3.

The Cardinals end non-conference play with a 12-2 record. Ball State starts Mid-American Conference play with an away trip to Western Michigan, playing at noon on Friday.
