Ball State women's soccer (3-0-1) beat Fort Wayne (1-3) 2-0 Aug. 28 after outshooting the visiting Mastadons 33-9.
Sophomore Emily Scott scored on a deflected shot in the 29th minute to put the Cardinals ahead by two, but she said the team should have put more in the net.
"We had over thirty shots and only two goals," she said. "That means we had thirty shots that were wide, at the keeper, or over. We need to work on finishing more."
In the 23rd minute, sophomore midfielder Lauren Roll put Ball State on the board after heading a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Gabby Veldman.
The Cardinals also recorded their first shutout of the season.
"We haven't been able to get a shutout these last few games," said senior defender Leah Mattingly. "I know it was a big goal today to get a zero on the board."
Fort Wayne only managed two shots in the second half, but Ball State head coach Craig Roberts said the Cardinals need to convert more of their offensive chances.
"I'm happy with the progress we have made, but not with amount of chances we didn't convert," he said.
The defending Mid-American Conference champions will next head to California to take on Cal State Northridge Sept. 2 and Loyola Marymount University Sept. 4.
