Steinbach allowed just four hits in the game while throwing 84 pitches. She struck out 10 Bowling Green batters in seven innings of work.
"[Steinbach] has been a catalyst for wins for our team, and she has really continued to step up her game and have the players around her step up too," head coach Tyra Perry said.
The win brings Steinbach to an 11-10 record on the season. She has a record of 5-1 against Mid-American Conference teams.
The Cardinals played clean defense behind their pitcher. They had no errors in the game compared to five from the Falcons.
Offensively, Ball State scored its five runs on seven hits. After scoring a run in the first inning, the Cardinals scored four runs in the final three innings.
Junior Emily Dabkowski led the team with two hits in four at bats on the day.
Five other Cardinal hitters had a hit in the game. Freshman Julia Bailey hit her first career home run, a two-run shot.
"The girls got into a groove and got more comfortable as the game went on, and really helped support Nicole's [Steinbach] pitching performance," Perry said.
Seniors Loren Cihlar and Jessica Craft added an RBI each for Ball State also.
With the win, Ball State improves to 20-19 on the season and moves them to 6-2 in MAC play. The Cardinals and Falcons will rematch at 1 p.m. on April 12 in Bowling Green, Ohio.
