Ball State drops doubleheader to Western Kentucky

Final game of series

March 22 - vs. Western Kentucky - 1 p.m.

The Ball State softball team opened a three-game home weekend series with Western Kentucky with two losses on Saturday.

The Cardinals lost game one 4-2 and the second game 6-2 to the Hilltoppers.

Western Kentucky took control of game one early, scoring two runs in the first inning. The Hilltoppers extended their lead to 3-0 in the third inning off a throwing error by Ball State catcher Jessica Craft, one of four errors made by the Cardinals during the game.

The Hilltoppers added a fourth run in the sixth inning, while the Cardinals still searched for offensive production. Ball State had two hits in the game.

The Cardinals put two players on base and scored a run on an RBI from first baseman Sammi Cowger. Third Baseman Julia Bailey also had an RBI on a sac-fly, but before Ball State could get any closer, Cowger was thrown out at third base to end the game.

The second game was a much more productive offensive outing for Ball State, and the Cardinals recorded eight hits in the game.

Though they hit more efficiently, the Cardinals finished 2-15 with runners on base and 1-6 with runners in scoring position. The two runs scored came from a home run by right fielder Hanne Stuedemann, her fourth of the season.

Western Kentucky scored four runs in the fifth inning to take the lead that it would keep for the remainder of the game.

The two losses pushed Ball State to 12-15 on the season. The Cardinals will look to get revenge on the Hilltoppers on March 22, at 1 p.m.
